Shepherd’s Pie is simple to make and most recipes are very similar if not the same. The one thing that makes mine different from most is the home-made gravy that I put in the dish. Some recipes have gravy, but mine doesn’t come from a package.

I’m not going to make this until after the SEC Championship game today, after my Gators win of course. So, you’ll have to wait for the video to watch me make it, but here’s the recipe.

Shepherd’s Pie

The portions sizes are totally dependent on how many people you are feeding. It can be made with small amounts or even larger amounts. Since I always have at least 5 eating and I make extras, I use larger size portions. Most of you can cut these measurements in half.

2-3lbs of Ground Beef

2-3lbs of Potatoes

1 small package of frozen Peas and Carrots

1 Yellow Onion

1 package fresh mushrooms

2 cups Shredded Cheddar Chz

1/2 Cup Flour

Dales Seasoning – optional for gravy. This is optional but its the secret to the flavor in my shepherd’s pie.

Garlic Salt – optional

Milk 1/2-1cup

Butter – 1 stick

Directions

Prepare everything first…

Peel Your Potatoes and place them in pot, boil til tender.

Dice Onion, set aside

Slice Mushrooms, set aside

In a large skillet, lightly cover pan with oil, on med high heat, fry onions and mushrooms til brown. Remove from pan and set aside.

Add Hamburger meat to skillet, cook on medium high heat til brown. Don’t drain the grease. Remove cooked hamburger meat and place in bottom of casserole dish, typically 9×13.

Keep skillet and oil on med high heat, sprinkle flour evenly across pan. Allow to cook/brown. Stir flour in grease. While stirring, slowly pour 2 cups of cold water into pan. Reduce heat and continue stirring. Add more water as needed til desired thickness. If it’s too runny, just sprinkle some more flour to thicken the gravy.

Add onions, mushrooms and frozen peas and carrots to gravy.  Add 2 tablespoons of Dales Seasoning and/or salt to gravy to your taste. Allow to simmer on medium low for approximately 15 minutes.

Pour gravy and vegies over hamburger meat in casserole dish.

Whip Potatoes with mixer – drain water from potatoes, add stick of butter and start blending. Add milk slowly while blending til desired thickness.

After potatoes are whipped, scoop them on top of the meat/gravy into casserole dish.

Cover and smother Potatoes with Shredded chz. Add Garlic Salt to desired amount/optional.

Place in pre-heated oven at 350 for approximately 10-15 minutes. Its already cooked, you’re just melting the chz at this point. When the cheese is melted and brown to your desired level, its ready to serve.
